I had a weird argument with a girlfriend. I couldn't sleep. My mind filled with images and narrative ideas as I tossed and turned. I crawled out of bed at 4:00am and wrote the outline of what was to become my first novel, The Unearthly Travails of Gabriel McGregor.

I borrowed a cheap laptop. I spent lunch breaks hyped up on coffee and writing. I set the book aside a few times for many months. Years passed.

Not long ago, in an effort to impress a woman, I pulled out the nearly complete draft. She loved it. I got chesty and embarked on getting it published. Initially, I self-published. But eventually I found a proper publisher, and it's now available on their website in digital and paper form. By the end of the summer of 2014, it will be available in bookstores.

Kirkus Reviews has reviewed it, and they liked it. "Dante's Inferno for kids ... The characters are smartly written, with a light touch even in the darkest moments", for instance.[see review here]
THE UNEARTHLY TRAVAILS OF GABRIEL MCGREGOR
It's a hero's journey through the underworld. Gabriel McGregor is an eleven-year-old know-it-all, who's sent to Hell unfairly after dying unexpectedly.

Released from Hell, he finds himself in the bowels of the Underworld, traveling through realm after realm, doing whatever he can to make it back home, and get back to his family. #MG #YA
